Day 6 Wednesday 12th July
Today, we continued our Australian East Coast road trip, travelling on to Agnes Water, a cute little beach town. We made a stop here as it’s half way up from Hervey Bay to Rockhampton, where we’re heading on to afterwards. We spent a bit of time on the beach in the afternoon having our picnic lunch. The beach is massive and, like so many we’ve seen, goes on for miles and miles of golden delight.
It was just a 10 minute drive across then to the small town of Seventeen Seventy. This is the second place that James Cook made landfall in Australia in 1770 when he was Lieutenant Cook and we went up to the spot where the crew came ashore for a look around. There’s not a great deal there but the view out across the sea was pretty awe inspiring.
Then out for tacos and chilli for dinner. There’s great little bowls of tucker at Codies Place to be had, plus some nice cold beers.

Day 7 Thursday 13th July
A road trip day again today traveling up to Rockhampton, which is around 3 hours north of Agnes Water. The road trips are getting nicer at this point as the traffic is thinning out and it’s feeling more remote – until you get to Rockhampton which is actually a pretty big town.
We stopped for home-made pies and cakes on the way through, essential for any road trip, which were amazing for such a small little pit stop. You got to try them out if you’re passing through Mount Larcom at the Mount Larcom Cafe.
Once we hit Rockhampton we headed straight for the Dreamtime Cultural Centre. It’s a pretty nice spot to get some local history and indigenous insight for an hour. Our tour guide did some sweet didgeridoo playing, and we got to throw some boomerangs as well as learn about the limestone landscape. There was heaps of info about Carnarvon Gorge too, which we were going to be heading to next – from geological and indigenous creation point of views. The tours are at 10 and 1pm and well worth getting there for one of those times.
For the afternoon we just chilled and the kids swam in the cold pool.

Day 8 Friday 14th July
We kicked the day off with a visit to the Capricorn Caves. Something you have to see while you’re in the area. We did the basic tour but I felt like we should have done the Capricorn Explorer. We didn’t go very far into the caves and it would have been great to have a bit more of an adventure through them. Defo go and see them while you’re around but if you’re under 80 and over 4, you’ll probably want to do the Explorer tour.
In the afternoon, we drove just down the road to the coast to Yeppoon. We’ve only been away from the sea for a day but felt the draw to go back there. There’s some nice eating choices in the town and we had the best food we’ve had so far on the trip at Alfie’s Chow Down – amazing Asian fusion food. The beach walk is great too with crazy water features for the kids to get soaked in and a huge climbing frame for Lou 😀 Great ice cream too at the Gelato Ice Cream parlour. Well, what else are sunny beach afternoons for??
Oh yes, and while we’re on the topic of eating – the evening took us to TruFusion Indian and the food here is amazing. If you’re in need of a spice fix, have the goat vindaloo – wow!! Other highly recommended dishes were the Chicken Tikka Masala, the Butter Chicken, and the Lamb Biriani. Oh yes, and the beer!! As you can probably tell by now, a huge part of our trips is trying all the best places to eat.
