Welcome to the next chapter of our adventurous journey around Australia, Darwin to Cairns the long way! After heading out of Darwin, our first stop along the way finds us captivated by the rugged beauty and untamed wilderness of Katherine and the surrounding areas. Nestled in the heart of the Northern Territory’s Outback, Katherine offers a tonne of attractions and experiences. The local magic is a long list, but great places to get started are:
1. Nitmiluk National Park: A Natural Wonder
Our exploration of Katherine begins with the awe-inspiring Nitmiluk National Park, a pristine oasis that showcases the incredible power of nature. The crown jewel of the park is undoubtedly the stunning Nitmiluk Gorge, a series of 13 deep sandstone gorges carved by the mighty Katherine River. Embark on a boat cruise or canoe adventure, immersing yourself in the breathtaking landscapes and ancient Indigenous rock art that adorns the cliffs. For those seeking an adrenaline rush, hiking trails like the Jatbula Trail offer the chance to delve deeper into the park’s hidden treasures.
2. Katherine Hot Springs: Serene Relaxation
As we continue our journey, we stumble upon the hidden gem known as Katherine Hot Springs. Tucked away amidst lush greenery, these natural thermal pools are the perfect spot to unwind and rejuvenate after days of exploration. Immerse yourself in the warm, crystal-clear waters and feel your worries melt away. The surrounding picnic areas provide an idyllic setting for a leisurely lunch.
3. Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park: Underground Marvels
Delving into the depths of Katherine’s natural wonders, we venture into Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park. Step into a subterranean world of wonder as you explore the limestone caves adorned with striking stalactites and stalagmites. Guided tours provide insight into the geological formations and the fascinating creatures that call these caverns home. As you emerge from the darkness, you’ll be awed by the sight of the park’s vibrant flora and fauna, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts.
4. Edith Falls: Nature’s Oasis
No visit to Katherine would be complete without experiencing the splendour of Edith Falls. Situated within the boundaries of Nitmiluk National Park, these cascading waterfalls are a sight to behold. Take a dip in the refreshing rock pools or embark on a rewarding hike to the upper pools, surrounded by breathtaking views of the rugged landscape. Camping facilities are available, allowing you to immerse yourself in the tranquillity of this nature lover’s paradise. A great place to take a crocodile free dip at last.
5. Katherine Museum: Uncover the Past
To gain a deeper understanding of Katherine’s rich history and cultural heritage, a visit to the Katherine Museum is highly recommended. Discover the stories of the region’s Indigenous peoples, early settlers, and the pivotal role the town played during World War II. Exhibits display a captivating collection of artefacts, photographs, and interactive displays, providing a glimpse into the region’s past. The museum serves as a gateway to understanding the diverse tapestry of the Northern Territory.
We found ourselves enchanted by the wonders of Katherine and its surrounding areas. From the awe-inspiring Nitmiluk National Park to the serene relaxation of Katherine Hot Springs, and the underground marvels of Cutta Cutta Caves, this region offers an unforgettable blend of natural beauty, adventure, and cultural exploration.
It’s also a great stop off that isn’t too far on your first venture out of the remote outback towns. From here the journey’s begin to get longer. Embrace it. Love the towns and all they have to offer, and then get out and explore through the vast nothing.
